FAQs for the Exercise Science & Sport Studies Major
Fall 2009

If your questions are not answered below, please contact any faculty adviser in the Loree Building, 70 Lipman Drive, Cook/Douglass Campus.

When do the new rules and regulations go into effect?

These rules apply to all students who declare the major during or after the Fall, 2009 semester.

What are the prerequisites for declaring the major?

To declare the major in either the Applied Kinesiology or Sport Management options, students must have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA overall and in a minimum of three courses required for the major.  To select either the Exercise Science Option or the Exercise Physiology Option, students with less than 90 credits must have a 2.85 GPA in a minimum of 12 credits in the 377 curriculum or the basic sciences in biology, chemistry and physics.  Students who have 90 credits or more must maintain a major GPA of 3.0 to remain in the Exercise Science and Exercise Physiology options.

If I am already a declared major in Exercise Science or Exercise Physiology, which requirements must I follow?  The old requirements or the new ones?

Students follow the requirements in effect during the semester in which they first declared the major.  They may choose to convert to the new rules but then you must follow all the requirements for the current major and options (i.e., you cannot choose some of the old rules and some of the new rules; your choice is “all or none”).

Are there any benefits to switching to the new option (Applied Kinesiology) within the major?

It reduces the number of labs required to fulfill the major.  It may save you an entire semester if you have not qualified for Exercise Testing and Prescription, a course taught only in the Fall of one’s senior year and which requires Exercise Physiology as a prerequisite.

Are there any drawbacks to switching to the new option (Applied Kinesiology) within the major?

Some labs may be required for admission to specific biomedical graduate schools.  Check the admission requirements for the particular schools you intend to apply to before finalizing your choice of options.

Does a required course still count toward the major should I get a grade of D in it?

Yes, as long as you have an overall GPA of 2.0 and a major GPA of 2.0.  The only exception are courses which are outside courses (i.e., non-377 courses) which have been approved as 377 electives.  They must earn a grade of C or better to be used as an outside elective.

If I enroll in a Study Abroad Program, will I be able to take courses abroad that count toward my major?

Yes; however, some upper level courses are not available abroad in certain countries.  Please obtain prior written permission for such courses before traveling abroad.  In general, the department supports studying abroad.

If I complete Exercise Science related courses at a community college, will those credits transfer to Rutgers and can they be used to fulfill the requirements for the major?

Most of your basic 100 and 200 level courses will transfer.  The web page www.NJTransfer.org specifies which courses from any of the 19 community colleges are equivalent to specific courses at any of the four-year colleges and universities in New Jersey, including Rutgers.  To be eligible, you must earn a minimum grade of C.  Grades of C- or lower do not transfer.

Can a course in a specific topic such as statistics or computers be substituted for the specific requirement in Exercise Science?

In some cases, yes.  For example, the following substitutes are accepted:
For Basic Statistics in Exercise Science (377:275), we routinely accept the following Rutgers courses: 960:211-212 and 960:401 and 960:484.For Intro to Computers (198:110), we accept Computers Apps for Business: 198:170.

Does Exercise Science accept on-line courses?

No.

Are Winter and Summer courses at Rutgers accepted for the major and do those grades count toward my GPA?

Yes, they are accepted and those grades as well as grades earned at Rutgers-Newark and Rutgers-Camden are included in your GPA.

If I have a substantial number of transfer credits, are there any restrictions on how many can be used toward the major?

Yes, you must take a minimum of seven courses specifically designated as Exercise Science (i.e., 377) in order to be awarded the BS degree in Exercise Science at Rutgers.

Can I receive credit toward the required internship or for field experience for volunteer hours or work-related hours that I have performed that are directly related to Exercise Science?

No.  All applied, practical experiences must be completed as part of our formal course offerings in internships and field work which must be approved prior to completing such applied work.  Retroactive approval for applied experiences is never given within Exercise Science.  Approval for Internships requires senior status and field work is approved only after completing prerequisites.

Which specific courses are determined to calculate my GPA in the major?

The specific courses used to determine your major GPA are listed on the Option Check List for each of the four options available within the major (Applied Kinesiology; Exercise Science; Exercise Physiology; and Sport Management).  Some of these courses are taught within other departments such as biology, chemistry and physics in the science options, and within communications, psychology and economics in the Sport Management Option.  These check lists are available on the departmental web page and can be obtained from the Exercise Science Office or any departmental academic advisor.  Degree Navigator calculates the major GPA automatically for you but will not include any credits completed within the major that go above and beyond the requirements on the Option Check Lists, even though such courses may be of interest to graduate schools and employers.

If I get a D or an F in a course and re-take it, does the new grade replace the old grade or are the grades averaged?

For the major, only the highest grade is included unless a course is failed more than once.  Then the second F is also included and averaged with the new grade.

Am I required to take an internship?

Yes, but you are not eligible to do so until you are a senior with a minimum of 90 credits overall, 2.0 credits in the major, a minimum GPA of 2.0 both overall and in the major and have formally applied for approval from the department chair.
